China tariffs on Taliban
China has announced that it will grant the Taliban tariff-free access to its markets in sectors such as construction, energy, and consumer goods, a move aimed at strengthening economic ties with the isolated regime since the Taliban's takeover in 2021. Chinese Ambassador Zhao Xing confirmed that Afghanistan would receive zero tariffs on all goods, which is set to bolster the Taliban's fragile economy, especially through the sale of its mineral resources like lithium, copper, and iron. Despite this economic engagement, China, like many other nations, has refrained from formally recognizing the Taliban government due to ongoing concerns about human rights violations. Afghanistan's exports to China have largely been limited to shelled pine nuts, but the Taliban is eager to attract foreign investment to diversify its economy. The Taliban has also expressed interest in joining China's Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to enhance its economic prospects. This development indicates China's strategic approach to securing critical resources while navigating international diplomatic sensitivities.
