Gregor Townsend Extends Scotland Rugby Coaching Contract Through 2027 World Cup
Gregor Townsend has signed a contract extension to remain Scotland's head rugby coach through the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, securing his position beyond the expiration of his previous deal in April 2025. Townsend, who took charge in 2017, is Scotland's longest-serving coach in the professional era and the longest-serving current tier-one international coach worldwide. Despite speculation linking him to a director role at Newcastle Red Bulls, Scottish Rugby has confirmed his commitment to the national team. Under his leadership, Scotland has achieved historic victories, including breaking long-standing losing streaks in Paris and at Twickenham, winning four consecutive Calcutta Cups, and significantly increasing Scottish representation in British and Irish Lions tours. However, challenges remain as Scotland has yet to advance beyond the pool stages of the last two World Cups (2019 and 2023), and while progress has been made, tangible success in major tournaments remains elusive. Some supporters advocate for Franco Smith, the successful Glasgow Warriors coach, as a potential future successor to maintain momentum and attacking rugby philosophy.
