Online News Surpasses TV in UK

For the first time, online platforms have overtaken television as the most popular source of news in the UK, with 71% of adults using online services compared to 70% for TV, according to Ofcom. This shift marks a significant generational change, driven predominantly by younger audiences who prefer social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok for news. Despite this trend, traditional news outlets like BBC One remain the most trusted and widely used individual sources. Concerns about misinformation and the reliability of online news persist, prompting Ofcom to review public service media content to ensure high-quality news delivery. Additionally, in Northern Ireland, BBC One and BBC News NI remain the most popular news sources, although reaching younger audiences continues to be challenging.
