The NHS has launched a vaccination program against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for pregnant women and older adults, aiming to reduce hospital admissions as winter approaches. Starting September 1, the vaccine will be offered to women from 28 weeks of pregnancy and to adults aged 75 and older, with a catch-up program for those aged 75 to 79. RSV is a leading cause of hospitalizations in infants and the elderly, accounting for approximately 29,000 hospitalizations and 8,000 deaths annually in the UK. Health officials stress that vaccination is critical in protecting vulnerable populations, particularly as RSV infections peak during winter. Research indicates that the vaccine reduces the risk of severe lung infections in infants by about 70% during the first six months of life. Public health officials encourage eligible individuals to get vaccinated to alleviate pressures on the NHS this winter.
