Murder Case Filed Against Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh

A murder case has been filed against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several top officials following the police killing of grocery store owner Abu Sayed during protests on July 19. This marks the first legal action against Hasina since her resignation and subsequent flight to India on August 5, amid widespread protests regarding a controversial job quota system. The plaintiff, S.M. Amir Hamza, has reported receiving death threats shortly after filing the case, highlighting the tense political climate. The case is part of a broader wave of legal actions connected to violent civil unrest that has claimed over 560 lives since mid-July. An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been established in the wake of Hasina's departure. The court has ordered police to formally register the murder complaint and initiate a criminal investigation.
