Six in 10 US Managers Use AI for Promotions, Layoffs
A recent survey of 1,342 U.S. managers reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used to make critical human resources decisions, including promotions, raises, layoffs, and terminations. Approximately 60% of managers consult AI tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft's Copilot, and Google's Gemini when making these decisions, with over 20% allowing AI to have the final say without human input. Despite this reliance, two-thirds of managers reported receiving no formal training on managing people with AI, raising concerns about the loss of empathy, context, and judgment in personnel decisions. Experts warn that AI systems, particularly large language models, can exhibit 'sycophancy,' producing biased or flattering responses that may reinforce managers' preconceived notions, potentially harming employees. This trend has sparked debate about the ethical implications of AI in the workplace, prompting legislative proposals like California's "No Robo Bosses Act" to ensure human oversight in employment decisions. Additionally, Microsoft's use of AI to advise laid-off workers has drawn criticism for perceived insensitivity and as an example of corporate reliance on AI amid downsizing.
