Typhoon Krathon Approaches Taiwan, Evacuations Underway

Typhoon Krathon is slowly advancing towards Taiwan, prompting the evacuation of thousands from vulnerable areas as it brings strong winds and torrential rainfall. Over the past four days, Taitung County has seen 3 feet of rain, while Kaohsiung registered 11.4 inches, with the typhoon expected to make landfall early Thursday. Sustained winds of 108 mph and gusts of 130 mph have led to the cancellation of domestic flights and the closure of schools and government offices across the island. Kaohsiung's Mayor has warned residents to avoid areas prone to flooding and landslides, drawing comparisons to the devastating Typhoon Thelma in 1977. Nearly 40,000 troops are prepared for rescue efforts, as many stores have closed and shoppers are depleting essential supplies. The typhoon has already caused four fatalities in the northern Philippines, where thousands have been displaced.
