Thai-Cambodian Border Clashes Kill 33, Displace 138,000

The conflict between Thailand and Cambodia over a disputed border has escalated into its deadliest fighting in years, with the death toll rising to at least 33. Both countries have reported casualties among civilians and soldiers, with Cambodia reporting 13 deaths including civilians and soldiers, while Thailand confirmed 20 deaths, including military personnel and civilians. The fighting has involved heavy artillery, fighter jets, tanks, and ground troops, forcing over 138,000 people to evacuate from border regions in Thailand and more than 35,000 in Cambodia. Thailand’s navy recently joined its army in countering Cambodian incursions in Trat province, emphasizing its commitment to defending sovereignty against what it calls Cambodian aggression. The United Nations Security Council held a private emergency meeting urging both sides to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic solutions, while Cambodia called for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire. Malaysia, chairing the regional bloc ASEAN, has offered to mediate, but Thailand has indicated readiness for talks only if Cambodia responds, and fighting has persisted despite ceasefire calls.
