Nuuk International Airport Opens in Greenland

On November 28, 2024, Nuuk International Airport in Greenland officially opened its new 2,200-meter runway, allowing large aircraft to land directly in the capital for the first time. This $300 million project enhances air travel accessibility, significantly reducing travel time and costs while boosting local tourism and business opportunities. The inaugural flight, an Air Greenland Airbus A330-800neo from Copenhagen, marked a historic moment for the region, as previous travel required transfers at smaller airports. Greenland Airports CEO Jens Lauridsen highlighted the airport's potential to double tourist arrivals over the coming year. The new facility is set to facilitate direct flights from major airlines, including United Airlines, SAS, and Icelandair, further integrating Greenland into international travel routes. The project, which began in 2019, involved extensive construction efforts, moving nearly 6 million cubic meters of material to complete the runway and terminal.
