Surfer Charley Hajek Recovers After Shark Attack

Charley Hajek, a 62-year-old surfer known as 'Gnarly Charley', survived a harrowing shark attack on September 22, where a bull shark bit his foot after he accidentally stepped on it while surfing. Despite the injury, which required 10 stitches, he was back in the water just five days later, chasing waves from Hurricane Helene. Hajek described the encounter, noting that the shark clamped down without thrashing and then let go, likening it to a warning. Following the attack, he continued to surf during Hurricane Milton, stating he has since seen 11 sharks but remains undeterred. He emphasized that sharks are generally harmless, attributing his bite to his own misstep. His resilience and passion for surfing remain unwavering as he continues to ride the waves.
