West Yorkshire Plans £27 Million Huddersfield Bus Station Revamp
Huddersfield Bus Station is set for a £27 million refurbishment aimed at creating a more accessible, energy-efficient, and modern facility. The redevelopment, led by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Kirklees Council, includes plans for a new entrance canopy, cycle parking, improved public spaces, better shop fronts, real-time bus and rail information, enhanced safety and security measures, and a ‘Changing Places’ toilet to support passengers with disabilities. A notable sustainability feature is the addition of a ‘living roof’ covered in plants, along with energy-saving solar glass. Despite delays, including a later-than-expected planning permission and modifications to the canopy size and cycle facilities, the project continues to move forward with public consultations ongoing to finalize designs. West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin highlighted the importance of the investment in encouraging public transport use and integrating various travel modes, while Kirklees Council’s Deputy Leader Moses Crook emphasized the project's role in supporting wider regeneration and improving access to jobs, education, and healthcare. Public drop-in sessions and online consultations are being held to gather community feedback before finalizing the plans.
