Nigerian Senate Urges Compliance with Court Ruling

The Nigerian Senate has reaffirmed its support for the Supreme Court's ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, following concerns raised by Senator Tony Nwoye about attempts by some state governments to undermine this decision. Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the Senate will amend the constitution to ensure local government autonomy is fully realized, and urged all states to comply with the Supreme Court's judgement. The Senate's resolutions came after a closed session where lawmakers discussed state governments' alleged tactics to control local government funds through joint accounts, which the Supreme Court ruled against. The Deputy Senate President, Jibril Barau, emphasized the urgency of compliance with the ruling. Akpabio acknowledged the contributions of lawmakers in supporting the motion and pledged to take necessary legislative actions to safeguard local government interests.
