A remarkable event occurred off Anacortes, Washington, when a humpback whale accidentally gulped a seal while feeding, as captured by whale-watching naturalist Brooke Casanova. The incident unfolded during a whale-watching tour by Blue Kingdom Whale and Wildlife Tours, where the whale was observed using a lunging feeding technique to consume small fish. Instead of filtering through its baleen underwater, the whale surfaced repeatedly, which allowed observers to spot the bewildered seal inside its mouth. Captain Tyler McKeen described the scene as amusing for the watchers but likely distressing for the seal, which was later seen emerging from the whale's mouth. Humpback whales, once hunted to local extinction in the region, have seen a resurgence, becoming common sights in the Salish Sea. The particular whale involved is known as 'Big Mama', recognized for having raised several calves over the years.
