Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, has announced its first purchase of 500,000 doses of Bavarian Nordic's mpox vaccine to combat a severe outbreak in Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has reported over 25,000 suspected cases and 723 deaths in 2024. This $50 million initiative will cover the costs of the vaccines, transportation, delivery, and administration, with doses expected to be delivered by the end of the year. Although 3.6 million doses have been pledged by wealthier nations, only a small portion has been delivered so far. Gavi's new facility, established post-COVID-19, aims to expedite vaccine distribution during public health emergencies. Gavi's CEO Sania Nishtar emphasized the urgency of converting these doses into vaccinations effectively, with plans to build a global vaccine stockpile. The WHO has declared the outbreak a global health emergency, and the approval of the mpox vaccine is expected to accelerate response efforts in affected regions.
