African Leaders Strengthen Anti-Corruption Efforts to Boost Governance and Development
Corruption remains a significant barrier to development and governance in Ghana and across Africa, affecting economic progress and public trust. Togbe Afede XIV of the Asogli State emphasized the need for honesty and integrity among leaders to overcome corruption and foster unity, peace, and prosperity in Ghana. The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition estimates that Ghana loses billions annually to corruption, which undermines development efforts and forces reliance on international bailout programs. The Ghanaian government is actively engaging stakeholders in formulating a new National Ethics and Anti-Corruption Action Plan (2026-2030) aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and citizen involvement. Across Africa, Commonwealth Secretariat-led training has strengthened the capacity of anti-corruption agencies, with leaders highlighting the importance of ethical leadership and collaboration to combat corruption effectively. Malawi's new president also pledged to address endemic corruption as part of broader efforts to revive his country's economy, reflecting a regional commitment to tackling governance challenges.
