Despite being considered an 'outstanding' addition by manager Alex Cora, Smith's performance was inconsistent, making him redundant on the roster. Smith has now signed a deal with the Cincinnati Reds, pending a physical. The Reds, currently in the hunt for a playoff spot, needed first base help after Jeimer Candelario was placed on the injured list.
