NFL Executive Tim Rooney Dies at 84
Tim Rooney, a respected NFL executive and nephew of Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr., died Tuesday at age 84 after a brief battle with cancer. He started his football career as a college coach and became director of pro scouting for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1972, playing a key role in the 1974 draft that produced four Hall of Famers and contributed to four Super Bowl titles. After leaving the Steelers in 1979 and working with the Detroit Lions, Rooney joined the New York Giants as director of pro personnel in 1985, helping build two Super Bowl-winning teams and staying until his retirement in 1999. Rooney was widely praised for his talent evaluation, integrity, and for discovering Hall of Famer Jack Lambert. He was part of six Super Bowl-winning teams and highly regarded by colleagues such as Giants president John Mara and coach Bill Parcells. Rooney is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, his children, grandchildren, and many friends.
