US Expands Swim Lessons, Targets Vulnerable Kids
Across the U.S., new initiatives are working to prevent childhood drownings by expanding access to swim lessons, especially for vulnerable groups. In Florida, the Nemours Children’s Health Autism Center provides individualized swim instruction for children with autism, addressing their significantly higher drowning risk through specialized methods. Tucson’s Lifesaver Swimfest, organized by News 4 Tucson and the YMCA, offers free swim lessons for children aged 6 months to 5 years, with additional sessions available throughout the summer. Pool Scouts, in partnership with the Hope Floats Foundation, is donating over 1,500 swim lessons to children in poverty. Experts emphasize that formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning for children by 88 percent. These programs aim to make water safety education accessible to all children, regardless of background or ability.
