Nationwide Tuna Recall Over Botulism Risk Affects Major Retailers
Tri-Union Seafoods has initiated a nationwide recall of canned tuna products sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names due to a manufacturing defect that poses a potential botulism risk. The recall affects various retailers including Costco, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s across 27 states. The defect involves the 'easy open' pull tab can lids, which may compromise the seal integrity over time, leading to possible contamination with Clostridium botulinum. Consumers are advised to avoid consuming these products even if they appear normal, as botulism can result in severe illness, including respiratory failure. No illnesses have been reported as a result of the consumption of the recalled products. The FDA has provided a list of affected products and their respective UPC codes for consumer awareness.
