Proton Launches Malaysia’s First Dedicated EV Plant in Tanjung Malim
Malaysian automaker Proton has officially launched its first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak, marking a significant milestone for the nation's automotive industry. The RM82 million facility, located within the Automotive High-Tech Valley, began full-scale operations in September 2025, with an initial production capacity of 20,000 units per year that can be scaled up to 45,000 units. The plant will produce the Proton e.MAS7, Malaysia’s first EV, followed by the smaller e.MAS5, and benefits from technical expertise and guidance from Proton's partner Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd, which also facilitates training and ensures adherence to global manufacturing standards. Designed with specialized areas for battery assembly, high-voltage safety, and electrical testing, the plant supports multi-model production and is optimized for both local and export markets. The launch, officiated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, underscores Malaysia's ambition to become a regional EV hub and aims to create over 200 new jobs, boosting the local economy and supporting sustainability initiatives. Additionally, Proton and AHTV Alliance have signed agreements to explore railway logistics improvements to enhance container transport efficiency in support of the automotive hub's growth.
