Merizalde, Sparks, Palacios Share Lead at LAAC
The 10th edition of the Latin America Amateur Championship kicked off at Pilar Golf Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with Peru's Patrick Sparks, Guatemala's Gabriel Palacios, and Colombia's Manuel Merizalde sharing the lead at six-under-par 66 after the first round. Sparks, who had a strong start with seven birdies and an eagle, expressed surprise at his performance, given his lower expectations for the tournament. Palacios made an impressive surge with four consecutive birdies on the back nine, while Merizalde, at 45 years old, highlighted his low expectations as a factor in his success. The championship winner will not only earn an invitation to the Masters but also exemptions for the U.S. Open and British Open. Additionally, it was announced that Lima Golf Club in Peru will host the 2026 Latin America Amateur Championship. The tournament promises significant opportunities for the competitors, with life-changing prizes at stake for the victor.
