Cause Undetermined in Deadly South Bend Fire

After an extensive 11-month investigation, officials have been unable to determine the exact cause of the fire that killed six Smith children in South Bend, Indiana, in January 2024. Despite efforts by the Indiana State Fire Marshal, South Bend Fire Department, and ATF, no single cause could be identified due to insufficient evidence. The fire, originating in the first-floor family/dining room, intensified after going unnoticed for several minutes. While electrical items were potential ignition sources, no definitive proof was found, and no evidence of arson or criminal activity was uncovered.
