Mary Earps Retires Before Euro 2025
England goalkeeper Mary Earps has retired from international football with immediate effect, just weeks before the 2025 UEFA Women’s European Championship, creating uncertainty for the squad. Earps, who earned 53 caps and played a key role in England's Euro 2022 victory and their 2023 World Cup final run, cited her wish to give younger players a chance after being replaced as first-choice goalkeeper by Chelsea's Hannah Hampton. She is recognized not only for her on-field achievements, including two FIFA Best Awards and the World Cup Golden Glove, but also for her advocacy for equality and status as a trailblazer for the women's game. The decision has disappointed head coach Sarina Wiegman, who nonetheless respects Earps' choice. The team now faces the challenge of major tournaments without one of its most influential leaders. Earps expressed pride in her England career and wished the Lionesses success in Switzerland.
