Man Charged with Hate Crime After Assaulting Woman, Child in Fremont

Marcus Harper, 22, has been charged with a hate crime and misdemeanor assault after allegedly attacking an Asian Indian mother and her 9-year-old daughter at a Fremont McDonald's on April 5. Prosecutors say Harper slapped the mother, threw sauce on the child, stole their French fries, and shouted racist remarks, specifically telling the family to 'go back to your country.' The attack is described as unprovoked, with surveillance footage and witness accounts corroborating the incident. Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson condemned the act, emphasizing zero tolerance for hate crimes and a commitment to prosecuting offenders to the fullest extent. Harper is being held in Santa Rita Jail on $110,000 bail and could face up to a year in county jail if convicted. He is scheduled for arraignment at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin.
