Public Support Grows for Haredi Military Draft
Recent surveys from the Israel Democracy Institute indicate a significant shift in public opinion favoring the conscription of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jews into the military, reflecting heightened security concerns following the October 7 attacks. Support for drafting Haredim has surged to 84.5%, up from 67% earlier this year, while only 9% of the Israeli public now supports the current exemption policy. The survey, which included 756 respondents, highlights a growing dissatisfaction with existing exemptions, particularly among the National Religious population, where support for conscription doubled to 72.5%. Despite this, the Haredi community remains largely opposed, with 61% favoring the status quo. Prime Minister Netanyahu's coalition is divided on this issue, as his government relies on Haredi support while facing pressure to address the military's manpower needs due to prolonged conflict. The findings underscore a broader societal debate over equality in military service versus the preservation of cultural and religious identities.
