European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kyiv to discuss urgent support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure as winter approaches, with Russian attacks continuing to target vital power facilities. The EU has pledged an additional €160 million to help repair damaged energy systems and provide humanitarian assistance amidst the ongoing crisis. Over 80% of Ukraine's thermal power plants and significant portions of its hydroelectric capacity have been destroyed, leaving the country facing severe electricity shortages this winter. Von der Leyen emphasized the need for 17 gigawatts of power capacity and outlined EU plans to restore 4.5 gigawatts through infrastructure repairs and electricity exports. This visit marks von der Leyen's eighth trip to Ukraine, highlighting the EU's commitment to support the nation during this challenging period. She will also discuss Ukraine’s EU accession efforts and the use of G7 loans to bolster its economy.
