Multiple Large Wildfires Break Out Across UK Nature Reserves, Grasslands Amid Heatwave

Several large fires have erupted across the UK amid an ongoing heatwave, causing concern for nearby residents and wildlife. A significant wildfire on Hankley Common in Surrey, covering approximately eight hectares, is being tackled by 16 fire engines, with officials urging people to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed; the fire is spreading due to strong winds and the dry conditions caused by the heatwave. Hankley Common, a notable heathland habitat and popular film location, includes land owned by the Ministry of Defence and a golf club, emphasizing the environmental and recreational impact of the fire. In Essex, a fire at the Birch Glen area within the Middlewick Ranges military site has produced substantial smoke and flames, with local authorities working to control it amid tinder-dry grass conditions. Additionally, a smaller grass fire near the Ridgeway between Weymouth and Dorchester was quickly extinguished by two fire crews, highlighting the widespread nature of fire incidents during the heatwave. These fires coincide with high temperatures reaching up to 33°C and have prompted wildfire warnings and hosepipe bans across the country.
