Dwayne Johnson to Reprise Role in Moana Live-Action

Dwayne Johnson has announced the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney's animated hit, Moana, with Catherine Laga'aia cast as the titular character. The film, directed by Thomas Kail and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, will begin production in August 2023 and is now set for release on June 27, 2025. Johnson will reprise his role as Maui, alongside John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. Johnson expressed his excitement about sharing Polynesian culture through this project and highlighted the strong, independent character of Moana. Auli’i Cravalho will not reprise her role as Moana but will serve as a producer. This adaptation aims to follow the success of the original 2016 film, which grossed $687.2 million globally.
