Following Hemant Soren's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on 31 January and his subsequent resignation, Champai Soren, a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party and former Transport Minister, has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Jharkhand. It's noted that Champai Soren, often referred to as the 'Jharkhand Tiger', is a veteran politician with a background in agriculture and is a close ally to Shibu Soren, the JMM party leader. Champai Soren has the support of 41 MLAs and the next assembly election will be in November 2024. The JMM's majority mark is by only four seats. Champai Soren's rise to power came amid an ongoing investigation into a money laundering and land scam case against Hemant Soren.
