Historic Locomotives Return to Multiple UK and US Railways for Heritage Celebrations

Several heritage railways and preservation societies are celebrating and showcasing historic locomotives this autumn. Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014, the world's only functioning Big Boy steam locomotive, will visit Colorado for a limited tour before a larger 2026 celebration. In Darlington, Locomotive 78018, restored after a 35-year project, returns to steam as part of the Stainmore & Darlington Railway 200th anniversary events, honoring the region's railway legacy. The North Norfolk Railway will conclude its golden anniversary with a nine-day event featuring the visiting mainline express steam locomotive 70000 "Britannia" and the rare diesel D9000 "Royal Scots Grey." Meanwhile, the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust's 0-4-0 saddle tank Kilmersdon, originally built for the Somerset coalfields, will operate autumn steam services at Midsomer Norton, including festive Santa Express rides. These events highlight the enduring cultural and historical significance of Britain's and America's railway heritage through public excursions and special celebrations.
