Family Sues NYPD Over Road Rage Shooting

The family of Kishan Patel, a 30-year-old man left quadriplegic after being shot by off-duty NYPD officer Hieu Tran during a road rage incident, has filed a federal lawsuit against Tran, the New York City Police Department, and Mayor Eric Adams. The incident occurred on May 17, 2024, when Tran allegedly fired his service weapon at Patel while both were stopped at a traffic light in Voorhees, New Jersey. Patel's mother claims that the NYPD allowed Tran, who suffers from PTSD and alcoholism, to keep his gun despite being a 'ticking time bomb.' Following the shooting, Tran reportedly drove home, stopped for gas, and returned to work the next day without reporting the incident. The lawsuit highlights the severe impact of the shooting on Patel's life, leaving him with extensive injuries that require constant care. Tran has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and other offenses, and he remains in custody awaiting trial.
