Yorkshire Man Ordered to Clear Illegal Waste Site by March 2025

Oliver Henry Alexander King, a 52-year-old from Bedale, North Yorkshire, was ordered by York Magistrates' Court to clear an illegal waste site in Catterick within two months after pleading guilty to operating without an environmental permit. He received a 12-month community order requiring 110 hours of unpaid work, alongside costs of £5,422.75 and a victim surcharge of £114. The Environment Agency (EA) highlighted that the site, filled with various types of waste, posed risks of environmental contamination and fire hazards. King had previously failed to comply with multiple notices to clear the waste, which included household items and construction debris stored dangerously close to a watercourse. The EA's Ian Foster emphasized the importance of environmental permits for public safety and the need for compliance to protect legitimate businesses. If King does not clear the site by the imposed deadline of March 21, 2025, he may face further legal actions.
