Former Sri Lanka President Ranil Faces Court Hearing Via Zoom From ICU

The court hearing against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was arrested under the Public Property Act for alleged misuse of state funds, commenced at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. Due to his health issues and hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital, Wickremesinghe participated virtually via Zoom, as he was unable to be physically present. His legal team, including prominent lawyers and President’s Counsel, appeared on his behalf, while additional government legal representation was also present. Security was tightened around the court and nearby areas to prevent supporters and opposition members from marching towards the court. Despite the large gatherings of his supporters demanding his release, access to the court vicinity was heavily restricted by police. The court proceedings continue with necessary arrangements made for Wickremesinghe’s virtual participation given his medical condition.
