Connecticut Mother Arrested for Leaving Children Alone

Lindsey Powell, a 40-year-old mother from Vernon, Connecticut, was arrested for leaving her four young children alone in deplorable conditions while she traveled to New York. During a welfare check on November 8, police found the children—ages 11, 6, 4, and 3—unsupervised, with three of them naked and living in a home filled with trash, moldy food, and human feces. The officers described the apartment as having a stench so overwhelming that it burned their nostrils, with the children reportedly eating moldy food off the floor. Powell, who claimed she was overwhelmed by parenting responsibilities, was located over 100 miles away and initially lied about her whereabouts. She has been charged with four counts of risk of injury to a minor and is being held on $250,000 bail. A joint investigation with the State Department of Children and Families is ongoing, and the children have since been removed from the home.
