Vedanta, a major Indian conglomerate, plans to increase its nickel and nickel sulphate production to meet the rising demand for EV battery materials in Northeast Asia. The company has urged the Indian government to negotiate the removal of import duties on nickel sulphate with Japan and South Korea, where demand is high, citing India's weaker domestic market. Vedanta transforms imported nickel ores into nickel sulphate, which is then exported primarily to these countries. The company's expansion aligns with India's broader goal to boost exports and support cleaner technologies. Despite government initiatives, India's EV market remains in its early stages, with EVs accounting for only 7% of vehicle sales last year.
