Over 40 Australian Athletes Test Positive for COVID

Over 40 athletes participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics have tested positive for COVID-19, reflecting a global rise in cases as vaccination rates decline, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Among the affected athletes are members of the Australian swimming team, with some competing despite their positive tests, including silver medalist Zac Stubblety-Cook. The Australian team has implemented on-site PCR testing to quickly identify cases and manage athlete health, with results available in 45 minutes. WHO officials noted that the current test positivity rate exceeds 10% worldwide, and in Europe, it surpasses 20%. The situation has led to concerns about the potential for more severe virus strains emerging amid ongoing transmission. Australia's medical director emphasized that living in close quarters at the Games has facilitated the spread of infections.
