Epic Games withdraws Cary Towne Center rezoning plans

Epic Games has officially withdrawn its rezoning request for the former Cary Towne Center, halting plans to build a new global headquarters on the site. Initially purchased for $100 million in 2020, the former mall has remained largely untouched since its demolition, with the company's plans sitting in limbo for nearly three years due to inactivity. Cary officials expressed concerns over the clarity of Epic's proposals for a mixed-use campus that included office space, commercial areas, and a hotel. The rezoning application, which Epic filed in 2021, was ultimately withdrawn after the company failed to request a hearing with town officials. Despite this setback, Epic Games continues to invest in its current headquarters in Cary, where it employs over 1,000 staff members. Should Epic decide to reinitiate the project, it will need to resubmit a new application and associated fees.
