Wimbledon Expansion Plans Get GLA Nod for Approval

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has received a significant boost for its £200m expansion plans, with the Greater London Authority (GLA) recommending approval. The project, which includes building 39 new grass courts and an 8,000-seat Parkland Show Court, aims to transform Wimbledon Park and create new jobs. Despite initial rejections from Wandsworth Borough Council and local opposition warning of environmental damage and disruption, GLA officers believe the economic benefits outweigh these concerns. The plans also promise to open 27 acres of public parkland and adhere to most relevant planning policies. The final decision rests with Deputy Mayor Jules Pipe, with a public hearing scheduled for September 27.
