Oakland Burglary Suspect Dies After Custody Struggle, Multiple Authorities Investigate
About 4:15 a.m. Saturday, Oakland police responded to reports of a break-in on the 11000 block of Ettrick Street in the Chabot Park area and were also notified that the person tied to the incident was experiencing a medical emergency. Officers located the individual inside the residence, and a brief struggle occurred while attempting to detain them; after being taken into custody the person became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital, where they later died. The department has not identified the deceased and said it will release information as soon as allowed by law. Officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, and the death is being investigated by the OPD Homicide Section and Internal Affairs Bureau as well as outside bodies including the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
