Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old law student, was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria after withdrawing from the Miss South Africa pageant due to a backlash over her dual citizenship and xenophobic attacks. Adetshina, born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, faced scrutiny and an investigation by South Africa's Home Affairs Department, which found no wrongdoing on her part but suggested her mother may have committed identity theft. For her safety and that of her family, Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa contest. Subsequently, she was invited to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, where she won and will represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition in Mexico.
