Trooper Ambushed, Wounded in Colorado Shooting

On September 7, Cpl. Tye Simcox was ambushed by Victor Anthony De Santiago while parked in the median of U.S. Highway 36. De Santiago, who had a history of criminal activity and gang affiliations, fired multiple shots at Simcox, hitting him in the arm. Despite his injury, Simcox managed to return fire and killed the assailant. The incident was captured on body and vehicle cameras, with footage showing Simcox's quick response and subsequent call for backup. CSP Chief Col. Matthew Packard confirmed the ambush nature of the attack, stating Simcox was likely a 'target of opportunity.' The shooting is currently under review by the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team and an internal CSP review is also ongoing.
