Four Charged with Assault, Property Damage at Portland ICE Protests
Four protesters were federally charged after violent incidents during an Independence Day protest outside Portland's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office, part of ongoing demonstrations against President Trump's immigration policies. Riley Freeman faces felony charges including assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and possession of an unregistered destructive device after throwing an incendiary device near officers and attempting to flee. Andrew Marcum was charged with assaulting a federal officer after tripping and kicking officers during an arrest, while Jeremy Hummel faces charges for spray-painting derogatory graffiti on the building. Ian Joseph McCarthy was charged with assaulting officers and damaging government property by attempting to break into the ICE facility using bolt cutters and cutting fiber-optic cables, also resisting arrest violently. These arrests add to a total of 22 individuals charged since mid-June for various offenses related to protests at the facility, which have included arson, assault, and vandalism. All four suspects were released pending trial under conditions including staying away from the ICE building and prohibition on gun possession.
