China, Canada Resume Trade Talks, Establish Dialogue Channels
Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have committed to strengthening dialogue and establishing regular communication channels to address trade and other bilateral issues, including the fentanyl crisis. China has expressed willingness to resolve trade irritants affecting Canadian agriculture and seafood products, which have been impacted by tariffs imposed by both countries in response to previous trade measures. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao emphasized the importance of resolving economic and trade differences through dialogue, highlighting the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 20th anniversary of the strategic partnership between China and Canada as key opportunities for development. Canada has prioritized urgent efforts to remove Chinese tariffs on seafood and agricultural products, while also engaging in broader discussions to enhance economic and security relationships with the US. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced a positive outcome from a call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, agreeing to resume trade talks aimed at resolving tariff disputes and supply chain issues, signaling a potential easing of tensions between the US and China. Together, these developments indicate a regional push toward revitalizing trade relationships and addressing ongoing economic challenges through diplomatic engagement.
