Nigeria Builds Tax Dispute Resolution Framework To Boost Revenue
Nigeria is actively reforming its tax system to enhance domestic revenue generation and address taxpayer challenges amid ongoing economic diversification efforts. The government, represented by Minister of State for Finance Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, emphasizes building a responsive tax administration that prioritizes fairness, taxpayer engagement, and efficient dispute resolution through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) approaches to reduce adversarial interactions. TaxADR, in partnership with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the UK's His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC), is spearheading the development of a tax-specific ADR framework aligned with the recently approved National ADR Policy to institutionalize ADR mechanisms across Nigeria's tax administration. This initiative aims to reduce dispute backlogs, lower litigation costs, improve taxpayer trust and compliance, and increase revenue efficiency while aligning Nigeria with international best practices. A pivotal two-day hybrid TaxADR Roundtable event was scheduled in Abuja to raise awareness, build consensus, and provide hands-on training on ADR’s role in Nigeria’s tax system, featuring prominent speakers from Nigerian and UK tax institutions. The reforms reflect Nigeria's strategic priority to strengthen its non-oil revenue base and create a more efficient, cooperative tax environment supportive of national development.
