Sindi, 41-Year-Old Southern White Rhinoceros, Dies at Louisville Zoo

The Louisville Zoo has announced the death of Sindi, a 41-year-old southern white rhinoceros who had been a resident since 1985. Sindi, who was receiving treatment for arthritis and age-related conditions, showed significant health decline recently, with symptoms including loss of appetite, lethargy, and acute respiratory issues. Despite various treatments to ensure her comfort, the zoo decided to humanely euthanize her, deeming it the most compassionate option. Zoo Director Dan Maloney emphasized the commitment to animal welfare in such decisions, noting Sindi's cherished status within the zoo community. Sindi's legacy continues with Letterman, another rhinoceros residing in the Africa Zone. The southern white rhinoceros species faces threats from poaching, impacting their conservation status as near threatened.
