Microsoft Launches Free Cybersecurity Program for 37 European Governments
Microsoft has launched a new European Security Programme (ESP) offering free cybersecurity support to all 27 EU member states, EU accession candidates, EFTA countries, the UK, Monaco, and the Vatican to bolster defenses against increasing AI-driven cyber threats. The initiative focuses on enhancing intelligence sharing related to AI-based threats, investing in cybersecurity capacity and resilience, and expanding partnerships to disrupt cybercriminal operations, many linked to state-sponsored actors from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia. Microsoft President Brad Smith emphasized that while AI is being weaponized by malicious actors, it also provides critical defensive tools, and the company actively monitors and restricts malicious use of its AI models. Examples of AI-driven disinformation include deepfake videos and audio manipulations impacting elections and geopolitical narratives. The program reflects Microsoft's long-term commitment to securing Europe's digital ecosystem amid a rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape, highlighting AI's central role in both offense and defense. Smith reiterated Microsoft's dedication to standing alongside European governments to protect their digital future and increase cyber resilience.
