Austrian advocacy group NOYB has filed complaints with the EU privacy watchdog against the European Parliament, alleging inadequate protection of employees' personal data following a significant data breach on its recruitment platform, PEOPLE. The breach exposed sensitive information from over 8,000 individuals, including passports and criminal records. NOYB's complaints come after the Parliament informed affected staff about the breach in May, despite learning of it months earlier without knowing the cause. The group asserts that the Parliament's failure to comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) warrants enforcement actions from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), which may include fines. Concerns have been raised regarding the Parliament's cybersecurity measures, particularly in light of previous incidents and an internal review that found existing protections lacking. The European Parliament has not yet commented on the allegations.
