The Paris 2024 Olympics have achieved a historic milestone by selling or allocating 9.7 million tickets, surpassing the previous record of 8.3 million set during the Atlanta 1996 Games. Despite this achievement, over one million tickets remain unsold, including for high-profile events like the opening ceremony on the Seine. Rugby sevens kicked off the Games with a record attendance of 69,000, showcasing the enthusiasm for some events. Organizers attributed the high number of unsold tickets to logistical issues and changing plans among ticket holders. To widen accessibility, around one million free tickets were distributed to local youth and underrepresented groups. The ticketing strategy has received mixed reviews, with ongoing sales efforts to address the surplus.
