The Sydney Marathon has officially been designated as the seventh member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a prestigious group that includes renowned races such as those in Boston, London, and New York. This elevation, confirmed at the New York Marathon, is expected to significantly boost tourism, potentially adding $73 million to the NSW economy over the next three years. The marathon, which had over 25,000 participants in its most recent iteration, is projected to attract even more runners in coming years, with participation expected to rise to 37,800 by 2027. The marathon's transformation over the past three years included a focus on the full 42.195-kilometre distance, resulting in its largest turnout ever. NSW Premier Chris Minns and Athletics Australia president Jane Flemming have both heralded this achievement as a transformative moment for Australian athletics and tourism. The inaugural Abbott World Marathon Majors-certified Sydney Marathon is set to take place on August 31, 2025.
