Dutch Government Commits €70M for Groningen AI Factory with €130M Regional EU Support
The Dutch government, in collaboration with the Groningen region and European partners, is investing a total of 200 million euros to establish a national AI Factory in Groningen, aimed at boosting the country's technological independence and AI innovation leadership in Europe. The government is contributing 70 million euros, with an additional 60 million euros from regional funds and a pending 70 million euros from the European Union. This AI Factory will serve as a research and innovation hub equipped with a powerful supercomputer, supporting AI development across sectors such as healthcare, defense, energy, agriculture, and manufacturing. Located in a repurposed former Niemeyer tobacco factory, Groningen was selected for its strong knowledge institutions, innovative companies, and robust energy infrastructure. Minister Vincent Karremans emphasized that developing homegrown AI technology is essential to avoid dependence on foreign platforms and to maintain economic competitiveness. The facility is expected to be operational by 2026, fostering collaboration among researchers, entrepreneurs, and government bodies.
